Carrot and Root Vegetable Storage

Carrot and Root Vegetable Storage

Carrot and root vegetable storage needs to protect firmness while accommodating the way produce is prepared for sale. Loose topped carrots, bunched radishes and washed beetroot do not enter the store in the same condition. Their packaging, remaining foliage and handling history influence how quickly they lose moisture and how the facility should manage each batch.

Frigovetta Refrigeration System designs, manufactures and installs storage facilities for carrots, beetroot, radishes and parsnips. These vegetable cold storage projects connect the receiving, preparation and dispatch stages through rooms suited to the actual product mix.

Start With the Product Format

A crop name alone is not enough to define the storage requirement. Carrots with their leafy tops attached are generally intended for quicker turnover than topped roots. Bunched radishes also need a plan that protects the appearance of both the roots and their leaves.

The project brief should identify whether produce arrives with soil attached, after washing or already packed for retail. Those formats affect loading arrangements, cleaning requirements and the amount of handling needed before dispatch. Room allocation should reflect their differences rather than assume every root vegetable can follow one programme.

Retain Firmness Without Trapped Water

Carrots and several other temperate root crops need high relative humidity to limit wilting and loss of firmness. This is a different requirement from dry onion storage. The refrigeration design must therefore account for moisture retention as well as the required temperature.

High humidity does not mean allowing wash water or condensation to collect around the produce. Free moisture can promote decay, particularly where liners or packaging trap water. If washing takes place before storage, the handling sequence should provide appropriate drainage and packaging conditions without unnecessarily drying out the roots.

Cold room evaporators are selected with the cooling duty and moisture requirements in view. Their placement should suit the loaded room, avoiding exposed positions where persistent direct airflow causes uneven drying.

Connect Washing With Cold Storage

For facilities with washing or grading lines, the refrigeration project needs to account for the product temperature and throughput leaving those operations. A holding room designed for already cooled stock may not have the capacity to bring successive warm batches to their target temperature within the required time.

Cold room refrigeration systems are sized against the agreed cooling and holding duties. Where a dedicated precooling process is needed, its equipment and connections to the packing operation are defined separately.

Routes for soil-bearing incoming bins and cleaned, packed produce should be arranged to support the site’s hygiene procedures. Drainage and access for cleaning are practical design requirements wherever wet handling takes place.

Protect Carrots From Ethylene

Carrots can develop a bitter flavour when exposed to ethylene. A mixed produce facility should therefore consider neighbouring stock and air movement, particularly where ripening fruit is handled on the same site.

Storage compatibility involves more than matching temperatures. Separate chambers and suitable operating procedures can help manage products with different atmosphere requirements. Their air paths also need consideration; a partition alone does not resolve unintended exposure through shared air circulation.

Make Each Batch Accessible

Ventilated bins, sacks and retail cartons create different loading patterns. The design should leave appropriate airflow routes and space to inspect batches without repeatedly moving unrelated stock. Product condition and the planned market date should guide dispatch priorities.

Cold room panels form the insulated storage areas, while sliding cold room doors provide access matched to the handling equipment. Door positions, aisle widths and loading heights are coordinated with the intended storage format.

Plan the Installation Around Your Crop

Our turnkey cold storage solutions combine the agreed room construction, refrigeration, doors and controls. Share the crops, whether tops remain attached, washing arrangements, packaging and peak daily intake. Expected holding periods and delivery schedules then help define a facility that supports the route from harvest to finished order.
