Leafy Vegetable Cold Storage

Leafy Vegetable Cold Storage

Leafy vegetable cold storage needs to protect freshness during a short and busy handling cycle. Lettuce heads, loose spinach and bunched chard can lose their saleable appearance through wilting, yellowing or damaged leaves. The facility must move harvested produce into suitable conditions while leaving enough working space for packing and frequent customer collections.

Frigovetta Refrigeration System designs, manufactures and installs storage facilities for growers, packing houses and vegetable distributors. Our vegetable cold storage projects are developed around harvest volumes, product format and the time available between receiving and dispatch.

Design for the Harvest Peak

Leafy vegetables can arrive in concentrated batches rather than at a steady hourly rate. A room that comfortably holds overnight stock may struggle to remove the heat from successive warm deliveries. Project planning therefore considers how much produce arrives together, its temperature and the required cooling time.

The selected precooling method must suit the crop and packaging. Vacuum cooling, forced-air cooling and water-based methods have different applications; none should be assumed suitable for every leafy product. Where a dedicated process is required, its equipment, capacity and integration with storage are defined in the project scope.

Protect Leaves From Moisture Loss

Leaves have a large exposed surface relative to their weight, making moisture loss a particular concern. High relative humidity can help limit wilting, but temperature, packaging and air movement also affect the condition of the product.

Cold room evaporators should provide the required heat removal without repeatedly directing strong airflow onto exposed leaves. The loading arrangement must still allow air to circulate through the room. Filling every available gap with cartons can obstruct that circulation and leave uneven conditions within the stock.

Any additional humidity-control equipment needs to be selected for the operating environment. High humidity should not be confused with allowing condensate to drip onto produce or water to collect inside packaging.

Different Formats Need Different Handling

Whole lettuce heads, loose leaves and bunched greens create different requirements for stacking and access. Crates must protect the product from compression, while pack openings need to remain compatible with the cooling method. Heavy loads placed over delicate packs can cause damage that refrigeration cannot reverse.

Fresh-cut, ready-to-eat leaves introduce separate processing and hygiene requirements. Their production specification should be assessed independently rather than treated as a direct extension of a room designed for whole, unprocessed vegetables.

For whole produce, the facility layout should make it straightforward to inspect deliveries, remove unsuitable stock and keep batches identifiable through packing and dispatch.

Keep Sensitive Crops Compatible

Ethylene exposure can affect the appearance and marketability of leafy vegetables. Iceberg lettuce can develop russet spotting, while spinach may yellow more rapidly. Neighbouring ripening operations and mixed loads of fruit therefore need consideration when assigning rooms and planning air movement.

Cold room refrigeration systems maintain the agreed temperature conditions, but conventional cooling does not automatically remove ethylene. Product separation and any required atmosphere-management measures should be part of the operating plan.

Make Frequent Dispatch Practical

A business preparing several orders each morning needs access to individual batches without leaving unrelated produce in a warm passage. Space for chilled order assembly can be included where the picking pattern requires it.

Automatic sliding cold room doors may suit frequent transfers when their controls and opening dimensions match the traffic. Cold room panels enclose the storage and preparation areas, with practical access for cleaning, drainage inspection and equipment servicing.

Plan Your Leafy Vegetable Facility

Our turnkey cold storage solutions combine the agreed insulated rooms, refrigeration equipment, doors and controls. Share the crops, whole or cut product format, packaging, peak harvest arrivals and daily collection schedule. These details help determine the cooling stages and working space needed to keep produce moving through the facility in suitable conditions.
