Tropical Fruit Cold Storage
Tropical Fruit Cold Storage
Tropical fruit cold storage must match the condition in which fruit arrives and the condition buyers expect at delivery. Mature-green mangoes waiting for later distribution need a different holding plan from ripe fruit ready for sale. Bananas, papayas, pineapples and avocados also bring their own temperature limits and handling requirements.
Frigovetta Refrigeration System designs, manufactures and installs storage facilities for tropical fruit growers, importers and distributors. Our fruit cold storage projects organise rooms around product maturity, delivery schedules and the need to keep different batches under appropriate conditions.
Plan by Maturity Stage
A shipment’s arrival date tells only part of its story. Variety, harvest maturity, previous transport conditions and current firmness help determine how it should be handled next. Two deliveries of the same fruit may need different release dates or room assignments.
For mangoes, storage temperature selection changes with ripeness, while chilling sensitivity also varies by cultivar. Papayas likewise require conditions matched to their stage of ripeness. Avocado storage programmes must account for cultivar and whether the fruit is unripe or ready to eat.
The room schedule should make these distinctions visible. Stock intended for later distribution needs to remain accessible without becoming mixed with batches already approaching the customer’s required eating condition.
Avoid Overcooling Sensitive Fruit
Tropical fruit can suffer chilling injury at temperatures above freezing. Depending on the fruit, symptoms may include skin discoloration, internal browning or failure to ripen normally. Lowering the room setpoint below the fruit’s suitable storage range is not an appropriate way to cool a warm delivery faster.
Bananas intended for green storage need particular protection from unsuitable low temperatures. Pineapples also require their own storage conditions and should not be managed as though they will develop improved sweetness during a later ripening stage. Their eating quality depends heavily on appropriate maturity at harvest.
Cold room refrigeration systems are selected for the agreed operating range and incoming product loads. Controls and temperature monitoring should support that programme throughout storage, including periods when rooms are only partly occupied.
Keep Storage and Ripening Distinct
Some facilities hold fruit before sending it to a dedicated ripening operation. Others need both functions on the same site. The layout must distinguish between maintaining stock and deliberately advancing ripening for a sales order.
Where controlled ripening is included, its heating, cooling, airflow, ventilation and any ethylene-control requirements must be specified separately. A conventional cold room does not automatically provide a complete ripening system. Air movement between treatment rooms and holding areas also needs consideration so that stored batches are not exposed unintentionally.
Receive and Release Individual Batches
For importers, the receiving area provides an opportunity to assess product temperature and condition before allocating a chamber. Representative fruit-temperature checks can reveal differences that a transport-air reading alone may miss.
Storage positions should allow staff to inspect batches and select orders without repeatedly moving softer fruit. Sliding cold room doors can be sized around the pallet and handling equipment, with clear routes between receiving, storage and dispatch. The required delivery condition should guide stock rotation alongside arrival date.
Build Around the Product Mix
Cold room panels form the insulated chambers, while cold room evaporators are positioned to distribute air through the intended loading arrangement. Packaging ventilation, pallet spacing and moisture requirements are considered together when developing the room design.
For a mixed tropical fruit operation, independently controlled rooms can accommodate different programmes. The project also needs practical access for cleaning, condensate drainage and equipment servicing without unnecessarily interrupting stock movements.
Define Your Facility Requirements
Our turnkey cold storage solutions bring together the agreed insulated rooms, refrigeration equipment, doors and controls. Share the fruit varieties, ripeness stages, peak shipment sizes, packaging and expected holding periods. Identify any separate ripening requirements so the proposal reflects the complete route from arrival to customer collection.
