Single or Double Leaf?

Single or Double Leaf?

A trolley may fit through a doorway on paper and still be awkward to move through during a busy shift. The load can overhang, the approach may involve a turn, and the door leaves need space to swing. These details matter when choosing between single-leaf and double-leaf insulated swing doors.

Start with the passage your operation needs. The number of leaves comes after that.

Count Leaves, Not Opening Directions

A single-leaf door has one moving panel; a double-leaf door has two.

“Double-action” describes something different: the door can swing in both directions. An insulated swing door can therefore be single-leaf and double-action at the same time. Keeping these terms separate helps avoid confusion when discussing an opening with a supplier.

Measure the Loaded Trolley

Measure the widest load that regularly passes through, including handles, trays and packaging extending beyond the trolley. Then look at its route. A straight approach needs a different clearance assessment from a tight turn immediately before the doorway.

Ask for the clear passage width with the leaves at their intended opening position. The wall opening alone does not tell you how much usable space remains around the frame and door hardware.

For example, a trolley carrying overhanging trays needs to be assessed using the tray width—not just the distance between its wheels.

When One Leaf Works

A single leaf is worth considering where staff and smaller handling equipment can pass comfortably within the model’s permitted dimensions. It can suit a modest opening, provided the full swing remains clear on both sides of a double-action installation.

Check nearby shelving, parked trolleys and wall projections. A door that opens freely in an empty room may meet an obstruction once the area is in use.

When Two Leaves Help

Two leaves divide the opening between two moving panels. For the same overall opening, each equal leaf is narrower than a single leaf, reducing the reach of each swing. This can help where a wide passage is needed but surrounding space is limited.

Check the trolley’s passage with both leaves open, including clearance at the central meeting point. Any direct contact between handling equipment and the door must be consistent with the door’s intended use.

Two leaves also do not automatically make the opening suitable for people or equipment travelling through simultaneously in opposite directions. Visibility and the approach routes still matter.

Check the Temperature Duty

Leaf count does not establish thermal performance. The temperatures on either side, door construction and sealing arrangement must suit the application. An insulated traffic door should not be assumed to provide the same closure as a dedicated freezer door.

Before ordering, gather five details:

  • Finished opening dimensions.
  • Width and height of the largest regular load.
  • Approach route on both sides.
  • Available space for door movement.
  • Operating temperatures and traffic frequency.
