Keeping Thresholds Clear of Ice

Keeping Thresholds Clear of Ice

A thin ridge of ice beneath a hinged freezer door can stop the leaf before it reaches its closed position. The obstruction may be small enough to miss from standing height, yet leave the bottom seal out of contact. Treat the threshold as part of the door’s operating area, not simply a strip of floor to step over.

Separate the Crossing From the Swing

Inspect both the route people cross and the area travelled by the lower edge of the leaf. Clearing the centre of the entrance may leave ice near a corner or farther along the swing arc.

Where rising hinges are fitted, the leaf lifts during opening, but this movement does not make the door capable of clearing arbitrary ice buildup. The bottom seal still needs its intended contact surface when the leaf returns to the closed position.

Do not raise the door or trim the seal to clear a temporary obstruction. That can create a permanent sealing problem once the ice is gone.

Arrange Access Before Removal

If ice affects footing, trolley control or door movement, pause transfers through the affected entrance and notify the responsible team. Check whether anyone is inside before restricting access, and preserve a reliable exit route throughout the work.

Use the site’s approved ice-removal procedure for the installed threshold, seals and operating temperature. Where that method has not been established, obtain the door manufacturer’s guidance before starting.

Avoid using the door as a scraper or forcing its bottom edge through the buildup. Sharp tools and improvised heating can damage finishes, gasket retainers or concealed heater components.

Deal With the Water Left Behind

Removal is incomplete if meltwater remains where it can freeze again. Collect water using the approved method and inspect adjacent recesses or joints where moisture may remain. Do not push it into the freezer or assume a heated threshold will dry the surrounding floor.

Look for damage revealed beneath the ice, including loose threshold edges or a displaced bottom seal. If the surface is damaged, clearing the ice alone does not make the entrance ready for use.

Confirm Closure Before Restarting Traffic

Once the area is safe and the door can be operated, check its full intended swing and normal closure. Confirm that the leaf reaches its proper closed position without striking the threshold, and that the bottom seal makes the specified contact.

For double-leaf doors, include both bottom edges and the junction between them. Restore routine traffic only after the crossing and door operation have been checked.

Record when the threshold was cleared and when ice next appears, if it returns. Rapid recurrence should trigger investigation of the moisture source, sealing detail and specified heating system rather than another adjustment to the leaf.

Include threshold condition in routine operating checks for your Hinged Cold Room Doors, with the inspection frequency adapted to the site’s loading and cleaning routine.
