Forklift access depends on more than pallet width. The mast, overhead guard and attachments all affect whether a loaded truck can use the entrance. For an automatic sliding cold room door, assess the truck in its intended travel configuration before finalising the route.
Check the height of the mast, overhead guard and load against the actual clear opening and any lower obstruction along the route. Use the installed dimensions: a nominal door height may not describe every clearance the truck encounters.
Allow for the Loaded Turn
Use the actual truck model, attachments and expected load dimensions when reviewing manoeuvring space. Turning radius alone does not describe the full path occupied by a loaded vehicle. Load corners and the truck body follow different paths, particularly when approaching from a side aisle. Have this movement assessed with the equipment supplier and the person responsible for site transport before fixing the route markings.
Protect the Departure Space
Reserve enough space beyond the doorway for the truck and load to clear it before the next planned manoeuvre. A staging pallet or newly installed barrier can remove that space even though the doorway itself remains unobstructed.
Position impact protection with both systems in mind. It must allow the assessed vehicle movement while leaving the door’s travel and required service access clear. Locate waiting positions outside these areas so a queue does not force the next driver into an awkward approach.
Review visibility from the driving position with the usual load. An opening signal confirms neither that the receiving aisle is free nor that pedestrians are clear. Follow the site’s traffic controls and the truck’s operating instructions where sightlines are restricted.
Before introducing a different forklift or longer load, repeat the route assessment. A doorway that served the previous combination may need a revised approach layout even when no door component has changed.
