Planning for Power Interruptions

A power cut during loading can leave a cold room door partly open, with stock waiting on both sides. Staff need to know how people will leave the room, whether goods movements can continue and who will manage the return to automatic operation.

For an automatic sliding cold room door, power-loss behaviour depends on the installed drive, locking arrangement and any backup supply. Establish that behaviour during commissioning, before an interruption affects daily work.

Agree the Outage Procedure

Have the supplier demonstrate the approved manual operation and release arrangements during a planned handover. Staff need to understand access from inside as well as outside, including any limitations on continued use. A door that can be opened for escape is not automatically suitable for repeated manual loading cycles.

Keep the relevant instructions accessible without relying solely on a powered terminal. Identify who will suspend deliveries or direct traffic to an alternative route. If a safe exit cannot be maintained, stop entry and follow the site’s emergency arrangements.

Where backup power is proposed, define what it must support: emergency opening, a limited number of movements or continued service. The electrical designer and door supplier should confirm compatibility and the complete set of loads involved, including controls and required protective devices. Confirm explicitly whether the door circuit is included in the generator-backed supply.

Plan the Return to Automatic Operation

Restoring electricity and reopening the route are separate steps. Anyone manually handling the door must be protected from unexpected powered movement. Follow the specified procedure for any release mechanism, re-engagement and restart. Some systems may require a reference movement or checks before normal use.

Keep deliveries paused until the designated person confirms the required restart checks are complete and the door is ready. If the outage leaves the room outside its approved storage conditions, apply the site’s product-temperature procedure separately.
